Money Matters
By: Crystal Matthews, LIMHP, LADC
Tax season has barely come to an end, and money is on most of our minds, particularly
in this economy. Without a doubt, one of the most common stressors I hear about from
clients and non-clients alike, is related to money. Whether it’s a couple who have
different attitudes about money and spending habits or families struggling to buy
groceries, concerns about money can weigh heavily on our mental health. So how can
you reduce this stress? Firstly, it might be a good idea to examine your relationship with
money (you can complete the questionnaire linked below to do just that). For example,
are you a spender or a saver? Secondly, make a plan by identifying the things that are
within your control. Maybe it is worth looking at a higher-paying job or shopping around
for new insurance. Maybe it’s something less drastic, like cutting back on the number of
trips to your local coffee shop each week or packing a lunch rather than buying fast
food. Whatever goal you set, make sure it’s measurable and specific. Start small. If you
tend to buy fast food three times a week, perhaps replace one time a week with a pre-
packed lunch from home. Lastly, enjoy the benefits of less stress!
